5 Methods to generate ideas
Idea generation is described as the process of creating, developing and communicating abstract, concrete or visual ideas.
1. Idea Challenge
Idea challenge is a focused form of innovation where you raise a problem or opportunity with the hopes of coming up with creative solutions.
2. The SCAMPER technique
It is created by Bob Eberle, and is a method used for problem-solving and creative thinking. It is a holistic way of applying critical thinking to modify ideas, concepts or processes that already exist.
1. Substitute – Substitution technique refers to replacing a part of your product, concept, or process with another to achieve even better outcome.
2. Combine – The combine technique explores the possibility to combine two ideas into a single, more effective solution.
3. Adapt – Adaptation analyses the possibilities to make the process more flexible. It focuses on other similar incremental improvements to the idea, process, or concept.
4. Modify – Modifying the idea looks at the problem or opportunity from a bigger perspective. It aims for improving the overall results, not just the idea.
5. Put to another use – This approach focuses on finding ways to use the idea or existing solution for another purpose. Also analyses the possible benefits if applied to other parts of the business.
6. Eliminate – The elimination technique is quite straightforward. It examines the possible outcomes if one or more parts of the concept were eliminated.
7. Reverse – This action focuses on reversing the order of interchangeable elements of an idea.

3. Opposite Thinking
Opposite/reverse thinking is a technique that can help you question long-held assumptions related to your business.
Often, finding the best solutions are not found through a linear thought process. Although our brains are wired that way, opposite thinking can help us question the norm.
4. Brainstorm Cards
Brainstorm cards are a useful tool for coming up with dozens of new ideas related to whatever challenge or problem you are currently working with.
5. Analogy Thinking
Analogy thinking is a technique for using information from one source to solve a problem in another context. Often one solution to a problem or opportunity can be used to solve another problem. Julia Kylliäinen VIIMA

Random words. Pick a word at random from any document, then look for novel associations between that word and your problem.
Picture prompts. Images can be a great way to inspire creative thinking.
Objects of interest. How about asking your team members to bring a small object of their choice to your next ideas meeting?
Finding Fresh Perspectives. Finally, you can add extra dynamism to your thinking by taking a step back from your usual standpoint and viewing a problem through “fresh eyes.” MindTools

Paul Krugman (2013), a zombie idea is a view that’s been thoroughly refuted by a mountain of empirical evidence. They nonetheless refuses to die, being continually reanimated by our deeply held beliefs.
- For example, evolutionary psychologists have argued for years that waist-to-hip ratio is a phenotypic cue to reproductive success.
- The hydraulic model of self-control is another zombie idea. The triune brain, the idea that evolution laid down brain circuitry like sedimentary rock, with reptilian, limbic, and neurocortical layers.
- Here is a shocker from APS Fellow Sari van Anders. It’s time to bury the idea that “male” and “female” are genetically fixed, nonoverlapping categories.
- The final example of a dead idea that continues to roam the psychological landscape is that people can read emotions in other people’s faces.
